Visual Working Memory
STAR-vWM: What kind of Working memory is Needed for the STAR Architecture?
Visual working memory is a complex phenomenon and may not be a monolithic structure. That is, in STAR it has at least 2 components at this point and perhaps more will be needed. One is a Fixation History Map which plays a role in STAR-FC (see Saliency projects). Another is the Blackboard that represents what the current attentional fixation extracts from the currently viewed image. This seems to require a complex interaction between several representations and with ST’s recurrent localization process. The details of exactly what kind of representations are needed, how they are connected to other elements of the architecture, and how information is processed are under active research. It is clear to this point that our proposal for its solution will involve a parallel, yoked, representation of the visual hierarchy, ST’s recurrent localization process, and a blackboard representation accessible by all other elements of the architecture.
